State Department says terrorists are responsible.
The State Department reported that the American Embassy in Baghdad was targeted by multiple rockets Thursday. State Department officials said the attacks were launched by “terrorist groups,” but did not say specifically who was responsible.
There were at least four missiles reported in the area—three landed within the perimeter of the embassy and one hit a nearby school. The rockets activated the embassy’s anti-rocket system. The State Department reported one woman and one child were injured at the school, but U.S. personnel in the area are safe.
The attacks coincide with the two-year anniversary of the assassination of Qasem Soleimani, the former general of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.
Iraq’s military called it a “cowardly terrorist act” that targeted “innocent residents of the Green Zone.” The military said the missiles were launched from the Dora neighborhood in southern Baghdad.
